Good Job
Carly Snoswell
Collaborating closely with Kaurna and Narungga man, Jack Buckskin of Kuma Kaaru Cultural Services, the Popeye artwork is a tribute to Kaurna language and culture. Rooted in a celestial theme, the artwork draws inspiration from the stars that adorn the night sky, with the river serving as a reflective canvas mirroring the Milky Way against the natural landscape.
Artist Snoswell skilfully adapted a reproduced image of a stitched and sequined quilt in her distinctive style to fashion a striking wrap for the boat. Illuminating the boat's side is the poignant term "marngu-marngu," a Kaurna word translating to "speckled." Additionally, 25 stars cascade across the boat's body and windows, leaving an indelible impression on the water when the sun sets.
Throughout Snoswell’s practice, western themes surrounding nostalgia and celebration have been a key influence. Gold stars have often represented a job well done, usually given as a small gesture to offer encouragement and inspire pride in children. The artwork’s title ‘Good Job’ was born, and acts as a timely reminder to celebrate and mark the small achievements in our lives.
Both locals and visitors are invited to view the iconic Popeye, a cherished tourist attraction along the Karrawirra Pari (River Torrens), through a renewed perspective. By intertwining indigenous heritage with contemporary artistry, the artwork not only pays homage to the rich cultural tapestry but also encourages a fresh appreciation of this beloved watercraft under the night sky.
Good Job was commissioned through a tri-party partnership between City of Adelaide, Guildhouse and by the James and Diana Ramsey Foundation to celebrate the 100th anniversary of philanthropist James Ramsay’s birth.
Reignite Adelaide Program
The City of Adelaide commissioned local artists to brighten and activate main streets and laneways across North Adelaide and the CBD. The project was developed to support local traders and provide employment opportunities for creatives.
Delivered in partnership with Guildhouse, the initiative, completed in 2023 resulted in 8 new public artworks.
